  2. One last thought before I move on to other things, regarding thisawkward moment, which is a fairly recognizable one: this image was drawn by a cabin boy who witnessed the sinking of the Essex, a 19th-century whaler. An enraged sperm whale struck the ship and sank it, and unfortunately, some of the survivors were cast away at sea for months, resorting to desperate measures to stay alive. I highly recommend this book:

retells Melville's epic from his wife's pov. I also recommend that one. Cheers!
